ITS is planning to install new security software, Windows Defender for Endpoint (formerly Windows Defender Advanced Threat Prevention), to the Windows workstations of administrative areas in the Managed Workstation program. Windows Defender for Endpoint is a more advanced version of the existing Windows Defender software already installed and is included in our new Microsoft licensing agreement. This enhanced software exhibits a more proactive approach to IT security. Whereas both Windows Defender and Endpoint use a rules-based approach to recognize known “bad” files, Endpoint also detects unusual behaviors indicative of a compromise and can help prevent adverse effects, such as data loss. ITS has tested this version internally since the summer, and it has successfully provided improved security without negatively affecting systems or capabilities. We have tentatively scheduled the update for computers in administrative areas for the week of October 25.
