ITS is implementing two changes to the UConn wireless (Wi-Fi) networks at the beginning of August.
The UCONN-GUEST wireless network is designed and implemented to provide basic connectivity for visiting guests. We have observed that computers on this network frequently utilize the FTP, BitTorrent, and SMTP protocols to transfer large amounts of data. This is inconsistent with the purpose of UCONN-GUEST, and to better align the service to its intended use, ITS will begin blocking these protocols on this network starting August 1st. Students, faculty, staff, and affiliates who have a NetID should use the encrypted UCONN-SECURE network.
RADIUS is a service that ITS uses to provide authenticated access to the wireless network. We have selected Cisco Identity Service Engine (ISE) to replace this legacy service. ISE will better secure the data network and those connecting to it through automated policy enforcement and delivery of secure network access control. It also provides a solid foundation that ITS can leverage for other community benefits, such as self-management of devices, sponsored guest wireless, and better support for contemporary devices. ISE is tentatively scheduled for an August 2nd deployment. A smooth transition for customers is a key priority, and many connected devices will automatically and transparently change to the new service. Other devices, including iOS phones and tablets, may prompt their owners to accept a certificate before connecting for the first time.
